Jefferson River

The Big Hole River and Beaverhead River come together in Twin Bridges to form the Jefferson River. As it flows from Twin Bridges the Jefferson flows in and out of cotton woods and farm country with very few signs of housing development, in this section you will find the peaceful river that so many have come to love. Once you get to Three Forks the Jefferson river joins the Gallatin River and Madison River to form the Missouri River.

Best fished in early spring and fall, it is one of the more secluded rivers to float with very little fishing pressure, becoming a great way to leave the crowds and chase some of the biggest Brown Trout in Southwest Montana. The Jefferson River offers a unique trip that not too many floatable rivers in Montana have to offer, with less traffic it’s not uncommon to see a little more wildlife on the banks. This is definitely the trophy hunt of your trip, its best reserved for the more experienced angler with a light heart willing to settle for a day filled with exploring. The trout population has suffered over the years as the water can become far to low and hot in the summer months, leaving a small trickle left for the trout population. When this happens the water has little oxogen left for the trout, during this time it is not ethical to fish the river as it’s already a lot of work for the fish to survive. Fish Wildlife and Park usually closes the river to recreational fishing for the hottest part of summer.
